NFLPlayerDrama: Will guilty Dogfighter Michael Vick Become a Rat? How Many Other NFL Players will be Ratted Out?
It would be very curious to find out whether a man, an NFL player who was so cruel to dogs will become a rat. Michael Vick pleaded guilty to a dogfighting conspiracy charge. He is ready to assume his responsibility in the matters as the bankroller of Bad Newz Kennels. Would it make any difference if Vick was mistreating other animals such as a goat, pig or a cow? Our connection to dogs makes us enact laws to protect them. As a society, we have been saying that fighting dogs is illegal and that we can not be cruel to them either. Once again, would it matter if Michael Vick, Falcons Quarterback, was fighting cocks? What if he was a mean cockfighter? Would it make any difference if Michael was a fisherman, a large animal hunter on a Safari?
No matter what, we as a society have set the rules. We have established the laws. Vick must own up to his guilt. Flanked by his well-paid lawyers, he is ready to take his responsibility in the mess. The disgraced quarterback is ready to ask for forgiveness. He is presenting his apologies to his teammates for lying to them. He is saying sorry to the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank and the public or fans. "I was not honest and forthright in our discussions," he said. "I need to grow up." He went on to admit to his guilt. "Dogfighting is a terrible thing, and I did reject it... So I got a lot of down time, a lot of time to think about actions and what I've done and how to make Michael Vick a better person...I will redeem myself. I have to."
No matter what Michael Vick can say to the young people of America, commissioner Roger Goodell suspended him indefinitely without pay after the quarterback filed a plea agreement that shows him as being less involved the other co-defendants. By doing so, he acknowledged bankrolling gambling on the dogfights. He denied placing bets or taking any of the winnings. He was an absent business owner. The NFL commissioner said of Vick's conduct, "not only illegal but also cruel and reprehensible." He added, "Your actions in funding the betting and your association with illegal gambling both violate the terms of your NFL player contract and expose you to corrupting influences in derogation of the one of the most fundamental responsibilities of an NFL player." He also freed the Falcons to reclaim or recoup $22 million of Vick's signing bonus from the 10-year contract. "You have engaged in conduct detrimental to the welfare of the NFL and have violated the league's personal conduct policy." Goodell was not mincing words in his letter to Michael Vick.
The letter's tone is very harsh, probably less harsh than the treatment that Michael and Co granted to the fighting dogs. Goodell's letter continued, "You are now justifiably facing consequences for the decisions you made and the conduct in which you engaged. Your career, freedom, and public standing are now in the most serious jeopardy. I hope that you will be able to learn from this difficult experience and emerge from it better prepared to act responsibly and to make the kinds of choices that are expected of a conscientious and law-abiding citizen."
